BROWN COUNTY DRAGWAY
2005 Season Champions!
***Points Champions– Champions of Champions – Gold Card Champions ***
Starter Phil, Staging Matt, Gate Man Darrell
It was important for Brown County Dragway to get these champion races in and thanks to the commitment of our staff and especially our dedicated racers we got these special races in on Sunday November 13th! The weather was absolutely fantastic for this time or any time of the year! It almost seemed that this race was not meant to be from the prior two weeks ago when nothing when right and the night fell too quickly. This race was not without its problems either. We were not able to complete the race due to things beyond our control and all of those with entries will be entitled to their value in car entry next season but our champions have been crowned. Unfortunately, not all of our champions or staff were able to come out this Sunday. All the members of our staff should be commended for a remarkable year. The track crew became a well oiled machine cranking hundreds of racers down the track and on occasion picking up their pieces. A few of our track crew are depicted above; long time crew members missing are Water Box Brad, Computer Jody, and Ambulance Mark. In light of the season ending, there were many heart felt moments for those racers who have raced their last race and will always be Champions in our eyes. Going through the pits is like going through memory lane, remembering those moments that made them so special us here at Brown County Dragway.
We are proud to announce our Points Champions for the 2005 season!

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS RACE
Each Season Brown County Dragway holds a race that determines the Champions of Champions. This is a FREE RACE in which the only way that you can have an entry is to win a race in that class sometime for that racing season. The winner will receive a red satin jacked embroider with their name and accomplishments. This is a very prestigious race in which the winner will have to beat all other winners in that class to earn the right to be called a Champion of Champions! Each race at Brown County Dragway is generally earned and a notable accomplishment when a race is won. This is why I would like to mention only one racer’s ability to get an entry into the Champion of Champions race in Pro, Street, and Dial-In. Scott Weaver was able to do what very few if any have ever been able to at Brown County Dragway and have three entries into the Champions’ race and should be commended for his efforts. Pro Kelly West, Ken Hunter, Lee Callon, street Scott Emmons, Bob Scruggs, Steve Day, super pro Ryan Russ, Jimmy Callon, Ed Johnson, Charlie Reed, and Dale Brand were able to get a dual championship entry in their class plus the Dial-In out of our 58 champions! I can only hope that this race is as special to our dedicated racers as it is to us. We look forward to rewarding the racers hard work and naming our season’s champions!
First I will list all of the Champions and then play out how the race took place. The * means that they were present for this race.

Rookie Bandy Russell is the 2005 Dial-In Champion of Champions running a 10.853 on a 10.85 dial and a 0.538 reaction!
Started a few years back by demand of the racers the ultimate Gold card is won by running off the top six racers in the points. The Gold card will allow this racer to have a free entry in the class in which he or she has won it in for the following season. The racer that is number one in the points gets a bye into the final, and the racer that is number two in the points gets a bye into the semi finals. The racers that are three and six in the points run each other and the racers that are four and five run each other. It is all broken down into a ladder so the racers know who they are racing.
If I am correct, last year all of the points winner’s earned the gold card through this race. This year there were two upsets. Super Pro Points winner Jimmy Callon earned the gold card however Daniel Zook second in points won the gold card over Pro Points Winner Pete Callon! Maybe even a bigger upset could be found in the Street car run off for the gold card. Fourth in the points Bandy Russell raced her way up to run it off against number one in the points Scott Emmons. During the season, it seamed that if these two drivers were in the lanes together they would always end up racing each other – as many as three times in one day! The known record to this point was two wins for rookie Bandy and at least 5 for Scott. Then the last race of the season, the last pair of cars to race down this 1/8th mile track were two racers going for the gold. It was an all out clean race, no red lights, and no fouls. As the two cars slowed down from running their pass, it was impossible to see which side of the track the winning flashing lights were on as it was at the edge of dark. With such a close race, neither of us knew who had won until we were in speaker range and with a dead on dial with a four ET the record became 3 to 5! It is a great accomplishment to be in the first year of racing and beat the best in the most important race of the year, to become the first woman at Brown County Dragway to have earned a gold card, the first woman to become a Champion of Champions (dial-in), and one of very few street cars to win a dial-in championship!
I know that there are other great stories out there and please send those stories as I would like to include them on our website (bruss3@indiana.edu).

Tribute to the Callons’ Success!
Just a reminder…for many of us racing takes more than one and we should take time to thank each and every one of them.
Here is to my significant others who made this all possible….
My wonderful husband Brent, our daughter Bailey who is just so much fun seen giving hugs to our 3 week old son, Waylon, who has been racing before he was born (literally). I put this picture in not to brag too much, but to share for all of the racers and their families who over the years and especially this season have become close to us. We will all miss you until the banquet and we hope that have great holidays!
My experiences have been so great that I intend on writing about them and sharing them with you. I would really like for you to do the same and please send your most memorable moments to my email (bruss3@indiana.edu). Feel free to send your best racer jokes J, pictures, or anything to make the winter short. So Send this stuff, pictures, or anything else that you can think of to me and I will do my best to keep the website active! Don’t worry; I can keep your name anonymous if you like. You can give me a call when you send something so I know to check my email (812-988-0274).
Thanks again for a wonderful season – and looking forward to next year!
Hey – don’t forget about the collector’s books with 30 pages of races - I have only 14 left of – they would make great Christmas presents and I can send them out to whomever you like. Just give me a call (812-988-0274). I can also make 8X10 calendars using multiple pictures, or do special imaging of your car as it is done in the collector’s book. Remember I still have pictures left over from this season and are still for sale.

Thanks to everyone that offered special early congratulations to my husband and I for the scheduled birth of our baby boy Monday after the Fall Invitational. As many of you know I raced right up to the very end to accomplish one of my two goals for my rookie year of racing - to get in the finals! The doctors didn't like the idea that I was racing, but I never raced without him! In fact the doctor with 40 years of practiced called me stubborn to postpone the cesarean until after the Fall Invitational and never had anyone postpone such an event for this reason. I guess I don't mind being a first for some things :)

Waylon Orion Russell was born on Monday October 17th weighing 10lbs 10oz and 21" long to Bandy and Brent Russell! He has a full head of hair and just as sweet as he can be! And yes, big sister Bailey is taking to him just fine :)
I also want to say thanks for your patience as I have had not found my way to the computer any sooner. I will try to get winners up as soon as possible.

Friday October 14th Fall Invitational
This was the first time ever to have Street car King of the Street Race at night thanks in a huge part to our sponsor, Wedan Performance in Columbus Indiana. It started because of a couple of racers talked about what they would like to see happen – back to the basics of racing without hurting the pocket book. Brown County Dragway and Wedan Performance made it happen, and what a huge success it was! Wedan had several sponsors that gave a lot of great gifts that were called out by numbers, given to those in the race, and several thrown into the stands that were shoulder to shoulder with fans! We had an awesome showing of fantastic street cars. You couldn’t look through the pits, or watch more than a few passes down the track without saying to yourself – wow – that is a nice car! And a lot of times it was a bonus when they had a spectacular run. Unfortunately I only heard about the car that pointed his headlights toward the sky for most of the eighth of a mile! It was a huge success – so much so that we had a lot of request to do it as much as once a month or at least twice a year. Let Brown County Dragway and Wedan Performance know what you think about this!

Saturday October 15th Fall Invitational
The weather couldn’t have been ordered any better for this great weekend. We had a lot of great racing including Eric Strandberg’s fast pass if memory serves me right of a 4.44 sec and 160 + mph! A few cars showed that they were tired but we got done in time enough to do a turtle race! The turtle race was sponsored by MK Roofing - Harold Mason. A random selection of cars was picked to dial 14.00 and race! Lucky duck Bob Scruggs was running the pumpkin van that was already dialed about the same and he took the win! It was funny to hear the comments from the firemen from the Fruitdale Fire Department manning the fire truck that was located near the finish l |
